FAQ

Questions and answers

Is RemoveBkgd really free, or is there a catch?

It is genuinely free, and there is no catch. Every feature on this page — high-resolution exports, batch processing, canvas fine-tuning, background replacement and upscaling — is available without paying, without credits and without an account. Because the AI model runs in your browser instead of on our servers, removing a background costs us almost nothing, which is what lets us keep it free. There is no premium tier waiting behind the download button.

How can it be free when remove.bg charges for high-resolution files?

Paid tools run the model on their own hardware, so every image you process costs them money and they pass that on as credits or subscriptions. RemoveBkgd runs the model on your device using WebAssembly and WebGPU, so the compute is yours. That flips the economics: we can hand you the full-resolution file every time because there is no server bill attached to your export.

Are my images uploaded to your servers?

No. Your image is read locally by your browser, processed locally, and saved locally when you download the result. There is no upload endpoint in the product. The only network request the tool makes is a one-time download of the open AI model file (around 42 MB) from a public model host. That request fetches the model, never your photo.

What image formats can I use, and what can I export?

You can load PNG, JPG/JPEG and WebP images (and anything else your browser can decode, including images pasted from the clipboard). You can export PNG with a transparent background, WebP for smaller files, or JPG when you need a flat image with a coloured background. PNG is the right choice whenever you need to keep transparency for compositing.

Does RemoveBkgd work on large, high-resolution photos?

Yes. The cutout is computed at a working resolution for speed and then applied to your original image, so your source resolution is preserved. Exports are generated at 100% of the original by default, and you can also upscale to 150%, 200% or 400% when you need a larger file. Large images simply take a little longer to render, especially the first time while the model loads.

Can I remove backgrounds from many images at once?

Yes — batch processing is free. Select a group of images, click "Remove all backgrounds", and RemoveBkgd processes them one after another, showing the status of each file. When the run finishes you can download every transparent PNG together as a single ZIP file. It is built for product catalogs, listing photos and headshot sets.

Will the free version add a watermark or shrink my image?

Never. There is no watermark on any export, and full-resolution output is not locked behind a payment. What you export is a clean, usable file — the same quality you would expect from a paid tool, with none of the per-image limits.

Do I need to create an account or install anything?

No account and no installation. RemoveBkgd is a website: open the page, drop an image and download the result in the same tab. If you want the fastest repeat visits, install it as a PWA-style shortcut from your browser so the cached model and interface load instantly.

Which AI model powers RemoveBkgd, and do I need WebGPU?

RemoveBkgd runs a single open, MIT-licensed segmentation model (ISNet general-use, around 42 MB) that handles people, products and complex subjects — including fine structures such as hair, fur, leaves and thin straps. It runs fastest with WebGPU — available in current Chrome, Edge and other Chromium browsers — and also works on CPU-only browsers, just more slowly on the first run. The model downloads once and is cached, so repeat visits and offline use need no download at all.

Can I use the results commercially?

Yes. The output image is derived from your own source file, and you keep the rights you already had to it. RemoveBkgd claims no ownership of your images and adds no licensing restrictions. The underlying AI models are open and openly licensed, so there is nothing hidden in the fine print.
